Day 3 is, without a doubt, the most challenging day of the entire Salkantay Trek — but also one of the most rewarding. We start the morning with a hot cup of coca tea to energize and warm up, followed by a nutritious breakfast to prepare for the steep ascent ahead.
Our journey begins with a gradual climb through rocky terrain until we reach the majestic Salkantay Pass at 4,650 meters / 15,256 feet. The surrounding views of the snowcapped Andean peaks — towering above 6,000 meters / 20,000 feet — are nothing short of breathtaking.

The climb takes around 3 to 4 hours along narrow switchbacks and steady uphill trails, where your determination will be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Vilcabamba mountain range, glaciers, high-altitude lakes, and unique Andean flora and fauna.
Weather conditions at this altitude can be unpredictable — expect potential hail, sleet, or rain at any time of the year, although snow is rare except in June and July. To ensure your safety and comfort, our team carries extra oxygen, and there’s always the option to ride a horse over the pass if needed.
Once we cross the Inca Chiriasca Pass, the most demanding part of the day is behind us. We begin a gentle descent of about 1,700 meters / 5,577 feet toward Sisaypampa, where a well-deserved lunch and a comfortable campsite await.

Conquering the Highest Point of the Trek
We start the day early, waking up between 5:00 am and 5:30 am to enjoy a nutritious breakfast and get ready for one of the most challenging yet rewarding days of the entire journey. Today’s goal is to reach the highest point on the Inca Trail — the legendary Abra Warmiwañusca, better known as Dead Woman’s Pass, located at an impressive 4,200 meters / 13,779 feet above sea level.
The trek begins with a steep ascent along well-preserved Inca stone paths surrounded by stunning Andean scenery. Today is considered by many trekkers as the most beautiful and rewarding day of the entire journey. After an early 6:00 am breakfast, we begin our day with a gentle climb towards the spectacular archaeological site of Phuyupatamarca, meaning “Town in the Clouds.”

After exploring Phuyupatamarca, we continue descending along the original Inca stone steps — more than 3,000 steps! — as we pass through sections of the mystical cloud forest filled with lush vegetation, orchids, and incredible biodiversity. Along the way, you’ll see agricultural terraces and other fascinating Inca structures that showcase the ingenuity of this ancient civilization.
Our day concludes at the Wiñay Wayna campsite, located at 2,680 meters / 8,793 feet. Wiñay Wayna, meaning “Forever Young” in Quechua, is one of the most impressive archaeological sites on the Inca Trail. After lunch and some rest, we encourage you to visit the ruins, which feature terraces, ceremonial fountains, and spectacular views over the valley.
